One thing you have to ask yourself today, I noticed is, "What am I trying to accomplish?". If you choose to be in the music industry why are you waiting for someone to put you on. Like momma always said, " If you are going to be in the business, then be in the business." Let me think, OK, that makes sense.
Don't wait, act now. The music business is like any other business. We buy or sell products or services. We hire and fire. We do all of the above. So why when it comes to the music business we act like there is a special secret to becoming famous or it is too much work involved to make it to the top. If a stockbroker on Wall Street made a million dollars tomorrow, trust me, he would become famous. So why do I meet artist that say I am a rapper or singer, and don't have anything to show for their talent. The keyword is investment. Ok, where are your business cards? OK, where are your cd's? What is the good excuse you are going to give me about why you are writing on your cd's to sell them as compared to getting them marketable by artwork or at least title printed.
For one, the reason why record companies aren't giving deals away easily anymore is because they want to see your business skills before you say "Show Me The Money." What type of income are you making from your own product? Wow, the record companies now sought of sounds like they are banks. And guess what, The banks are not going to lend money to risks. There I said it. I hope I made you think.
Personally I Think, The Story Is To Be Sold Not Told. I Am Going To Bless You Today.
1. Even if you are a solo artist, join a team. If the team is already busy, then find a way yourself to be a part of the team. What are you waiting for a special invite? Ask where do you fit in and when you are told the answer, then jump on it. You don't know how many times I hear people want to be apart of my movement and when I tell them I have room, I see they are waiting for me to go to them. Do you think Russell Simmons is going to knock on your door? Keep waiting, you have a better chance to be greeted by a whale on 42nd Street. Like someone once told me, "Get In Where You Fit In." Stop trying to be a star, and help in on the back end of the business so you can learn the business, DUHHHHHHHHHH.
2. Invest In Self. You will make the money back if you put in the work. That is why some companies look for self starters. If you just spent $3000.00 on some clothes within 3 months and you ask why no one knows about you being a rapper or is at least willing to help, trust me, they are looking at you like well what are you doing with your money that you can not contribute to your product.(Bank or Invest Before You Ball Homey)
3. You are a business, then act like one. To be a label, (Damn, I hate giving away secrets) I do it because I have to give you reasons to come back to my site. Are you ready? Ok, A record company will promote, manufacture, distribute, market, advertise, produce the goods of an artist. It's that simple. No wonder they turned to the 360 deal for those that know about it. When you as an independent artist, cover those 6 positions then guess what you are a label and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
I am done sharing secrets. Hit me up for more info because I have to go to work.
